Morocco Cracks Down on Corruption: Local Officials Required to Declare Assets

The Ministry of the Interior has decided to track down illicit enrichment among moqadems and other authority auxiliaries, plagued by corruption. They are invited to declare their assets.
In order to fight corruption, the Ministry of the Interior intends to inventory all the property of moqadems and other authority auxiliaries, according to Assabah. In this sense, it asks the persons concerned to fill out a form as soon as possible. They must provide details on their assets, as well as elements to assess their financial situation. This inventory of the assets of the authority auxiliaries follows the transmission to the Ministry of the Interior of several reports indicating possible cases of illicit enrichment.
Already, a hundred moqadems working in different cities have been suspended and should be brought before the courts, while others should be reassigned, following an investigation conducted by the gendarmerie services in different regions of the kingdom. This investigation, which follows citizens’ complaints, reveals several dysfunctions for which the authority auxiliaries are responsible. The investigators uncovered several cases of corruption that mainly benefited the barons of anarchic housing. As a result, there is a proliferation of anarchic "residential" programs.
