Morocco Cracks Down on Corruption: Local Officials Dismissed in Anti-Graft Campaign

Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit is on a crusade against corruption within local authorities. He has instructed walis and governors to dismiss commune presidents who are in conflict of interest situations. Several elected officials have already been dismissed.
The Moroccan authorities are conducting a major campaign against corruption within local authorities by applying the principle of linking responsibility to accountability, reports Challenge.ma. This fight follows the strict instructions given by the Minister of the Interior to the walis and governors to dismiss the presidents of communes who are in situations of conflicts of interest.
The fight is already bearing fruit. The new president of the Ait Milk Communal Council and two members of the same council were dismissed due to a conflict of interest following a complaint filed by the governor of the province of Chtouka Ait Baha with the administrative court of Agadir. These elected officials are accused of having a contractual relationship with the commune by renting stores belonging to the commune. A clear violation of Article 64 of Organic Law 113.14 on groups.
