Morocco Cracks Down on Bureaucratic Delays, Targets Corruption in Local Government

The Ministry of the Interior has instructed the walis and governors, the presidents of the municipal councils, to address the significant delays in processing citizens’ requests, particularly those of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs).
The department of Abdelouafi Laftit wants to put an end to the significant delays in processing citizens’ requests, particularly those of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), who are numerous in the country during the summer season, the legal disputes between citizens and local authorities regarding certificates or administrative authorizations, and corruption. It also wants to curb the growing interference of certain advisors in the management of municipal services, especially when they intervene in favor of users in their constituencies. In this regard, it has issued new instructions to the walis and governors. They are instructed to urge the heads of circles, pashas and caids to be firm in the face of any obstacle to the interests of citizens.
As for the presidents of the municipal councils, they will have to mobilize their service directors to implement without delay the administrative measures necessary to improve the services provided. The ministry has also instructed that regular reports be sent to the provincial authorities to inform them of the measures taken, the state of local public services and the quality of their operation.
