Morocco's COVID-19 Strategy Prevented 16,000 Deaths, Official Says

About 16,000 deaths have been avoided in Morocco since the beginning of the health crisis related to Covid-19, according to the coordinator of the National Public Health Emergency Operations Center of the Ministry of Health, Mouad Merabet.

In an interview on 2M, the official established a preliminary assessment of the national strategy applied against the pandemic, indicating that about 16,000 deaths were avoided during the two years of the crisis, or double the current total, thanks to the coordinated management by the Moroccan authorities.

To date, the kingdom has 44 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 286 per 100,000 in the United States, 214 per 100,000 inhabitants in Spain and 206 per 100,000 inhabitants in France, according to the expert, who adds that Morocco was able to avoid two waves of Covid-19 transmission, thanks to the various measures taken.

For now, the last wave caused by the Omicron variant, which caused nearly 1,182 deaths, is over, marking the beginning of the post-wave phase or the third inter-period. Certainly, the country’s health epidemic situation is a glimmer of hope, but caution is in order, he said, specifying that the end of this wave does not mean the end of the pandemic.

Regarding vaccination, the official indicated that the figures show the high degree of protection of vaccines against the disease and death. Thus, the percentage of deaths per 100,000 inhabitants of people with a complete vaccination schedule is 86% lower compared to unvaccinated people.
