Morocco’s COVID-19 Cases Decline as Vaccine Supply Reaches 7 Million Doses

Morocco now has 7 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, after receiving 500,000 additional doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine from Beijing on Tuesday. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Health.
The report presented by the head of the communicable diseases division at the Directorate of Epidemiology and Disease Control at the ministry, Abdelkrim Meziane Belfkih, also notes that for the 13th consecutive time, the reproduction rate (R0) of Covid-19 has shown an improvement and stabilized last Sunday at 0.85.
As for the death curve, it recorded a 30% decrease last week, while the weekly infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants reached 8.6% last week, compared to 13.3% at the end of January. Globally, Morocco is ranked 37th and 3rd in Africa in terms of the number of deaths. In total, 8,491 patients have succumbed to the coronavirus nationwide, a fatality rate of 1.8%.
In his presentation of the report, the official reported a significant decrease (-20%) in the number of active cases, which went from 13,099 cases two weeks ago to 10,555 last Monday. Regarding the cases in intensive care, they experienced a 37% decrease in the last two weeks, from 744 to 422.
He also specified that the weekly epidemiological curve related to the coronavirus in Morocco has increased in the regions of Guelmim-Oued-Noun (+14.8%) and Beni Mellal-Khénifra (+4.5%). As of February 17, 2021, the total number of cases recorded since the beginning of the pandemic has reached 479,579.
