Morocco courts the money of Moroccans living abroad, but ignores their political demands

The recent cabinet reshuffle has confirmed the government’s lack of interest in the demands of the Moroccan community established abroad. Despite calls for the creation of a dedicated ministry, the government did not see fit to respond to this request.
However, Morocco is counting on the financial contribution of Moroccans living abroad. Fund transfers represent a significant windfall for the country, exceeding 100 billion dirhams last year.
Karim Zidane, the delegate minister in charge of investment, wants to transform these "consumerist" transfers into productive investments. He encourages the diaspora to get more involved in the development of Morocco.
"We will go to meet them in the countries where they live, we will speak to them in the language they speak, we will simplify the procedures for them and explain the investment opportunities in their country," he said during a session of oral questions in parliament.
The minister also mentioned the simplification of investments for Moroccans living abroad in response to the question of "the complexity of administrative investment procedures for members of the Moroccan diaspora" raised by the RNI group. For Zidane, "the National Committee for the Simplification of Administrative Procedures and Formalities, chaired by the Head of Government, has simplified and digitized 22 administrative decisions, currently being studied at the level of the regional investment centers, making it possible to reduce by an average of 45% the documents required from investors."
The government is counting on the attachment of Moroccans abroad to their country of origin to encourage them to invest in development projects. It hopes to thus promote "sustainable growth in all regions of Morocco" and reduce territorial disparities.
