Morocco Court Delays Ruling on Hijab Ban in Catholic School

The court of first instance in Kénitra has decided to postpone until next Tuesday the case concerning a Catholic school that has banned a student from continuing her studies because of the wearing of the veil.

In a statement to Hespress, lawyer Rachid Ait Belarbi indicated that the ban on a student continuing her schooling because of the wearing of the veil constitutes an overstepping of the prerogatives of the regional directorate of national education, which must be aware of what is happening within the schools.

The director of the Don Bosco Foundation, for his part, says he is "surprised by the recourse to justice", adding that he respects this right and the decisions that will be handed down by the court. Also, he recalled that the student, "after years in the establishment, knew its internal regulations but suddenly started wearing the veil". According to the official, the student and her mother have the right to have convictions, but "we cannot have an internal regulation adapted to each person".

"The parents chose this school, and the fact that the mother continues to enroll her daughter there for years means that she was satisfied with it... The establishment has its own rules... and the student could change schools," the director insisted.
