Morocco Counters Paternity Claim Against Late King Hassan II with Fraud Complaint

Monday 16 January 2023, by Ginette

After 18 years of calm, the case of the alleged "hidden daughter" of King Hassan II resurfaced with a paternity suit filed in Belgium on one side, and on the other, a complaint filed by Morocco for "fraud".

In 2005, Jane Benzaquen alias Hedva Selaa, an Israeli woman, claimed to be the daughter that Prince Heir Moulay Hassan, who became Hassan II, would have had. She would be the result of a liaison between Anita - the niece of Léon, a former Moroccan Minister of Posts and Telecommunications - and Moulay Hassan, then 23 years old. This surprising revelation made headlines for a few weeks before falling into oblivion, recalls Le Desk.

But without knowing Jane Benzaquen, determined to prove that she is of royal blood. In Brussels, where she lived for 18 years, she has hired several Belgian lawyers who presented the Moroccan ambassador in Belgium with a "particularly sensitive" file as well as the claims of their client, with the aim of finding "an amicable, discreet, fair and equitable solution".

She has also seized the family chamber of the court of first instance of Brabant wallon, within the framework of a paternity suit. Objective, to establish the royal filiation of Jane Benzaquen who hopes for a financial compensation of around fifteen million euros. In response to this action, Morocco filed a complaint for "fraud" with a Brussels investigating judge, against her and the Belgian members of her family.

The lawyer for Morocco, Me Stanislas Eskenazi, who regrets that "the Belgian justice system is thus taken hostage" intends to obtain the conviction of "the swindler".
