Morocco's Consumer Price Index Rises 4.9% in July, Food Costs Surge 11.7%

The consumer price index (CPI) increased by 4.9% in July 2023, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

This upward trend recorded during the month of July stems from the increase in the food products index by 11.7% and that of non-food products by 0.4%, with a variation of -7% for "transport" and +5.8% for "restaurants and hotels", specifies an information note on the CPI for the period.

In detail, a 0.3% increase in the CPI in July compared to the previous month is noted, resulting from a 0.7% increase in the food products index and a 0.2% increase in the non-food products index. For food products, the increases concern "Fruits" with 9.2%, "Fish and seafood" (4.4%), "Meats" (0.7%), "Oils and fats" (0.3%), "Coffee, tea and cocoa" (0.2%) and "Sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery" (0.1%).

On the other hand, decreases were noted for "Vegetables" (3.3%), "Milk, cheese and eggs" (0.6%) and for "Bread and cereals" (0.2%). For non-food products, a 0.5% increase was recorded for "Fuels".

By city, Al-Hoceima recorded the largest increase (2.9%), followed by Beni-Mellal (1.4%), Safi (1.2%), Tetouan (1.1%), Dakhla (1%), Kenitra (0.7%), Laayoune and Guelmim (0.6%) and Rabat (0.5%). On the other hand, decreases of 0.5% and 0.3% were recorded respectively in Fez and Errachidia. As for the underlying inflation indicator, which does not concern volatile price products and public tariff products, it would have recorded an increase of 0.3% compared to June 2023 and 5.4% compared to July 2022.
