Morocco’s Consumer Price Index Rises 0.3% in August, Led by Food Costs

The High Commission for Planning (HCP) announced that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed, in August 2019, an increase of 0.3% compared to July. The 0.7% increase in the food product index and the 0.2% increase in the non-food product index would be at the origin of this increase.
The details on this increase in the Consumer Price Index are detailed in an HCP note.
The increases in food products observed between July and August 2019 mainly concern "fruits" with 4.8%, "fish and seafood" with 2.8%, "meats" with 1.3% and "oils and fats" with 0.8%, noting that prices have, on the other hand, decreased by 1.7% for "vegetables" and 0.2% for "milk, cheese and eggs".
The largest increases in the CPI, according to the same source, were recorded in Al-Hoceima (2%), Guelmim and Beni-Mellal (1.1%), Laâyoune (0.9%), Tétouan and Dakhla (0.8%), Agadir and Kénitra (0.6%) Casablanca and Oujda (0.5%). On the other hand, the cities of Marrakech and Rabat recorded a decrease of 0.2% each.
