Morocco’s Constitutional Court Invalidates Two Parliamentary Seats in Casablanca

The Constitutional Court has just invalidated the election of two deputies, elected respectively on the lists of the PAM and the Istiqlal party. This decision comes nearly six months after the legislative elections that favored the return to power of the RNI and the decline of the PJD currently led by Abdelilah Bekirane.
The decision to cancel the seats of Abdelhak Chafik, elected under the colors of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) and Ismail Benbi, of the Istiqlal party in the lower house, was made on June 29. Bad news for these two parties, members of the parliamentary majority.
The Constitutional Court looked into these two cases following the petitions filed by Abdelhak Hilal of the PPS, a candidate in the last legislative elections, and by Abdelaziz El Omari who has still not accepted the defeat recorded in his electoral stronghold.
According to the daily Al Akhbar, the two deputies who have just lost their seats had disseminated on social networks and distributed to voters posters that did not contain the names and photos of the other candidates on their lists.
After the cancellation of the elections in Al Hoceima, it is the turn of Casablanca to suffer the same fate, thus inflicting a severe blow on the parliamentary majority. The by-elections will be held on July 21.
