Morocco's Constitutional Court Approves Law Ending Pension Scheme for Lawmakers

In its decision addressed to the President of the House of Representatives, the Court stresses "the conformity of the law text on the liquidation of the retirement scheme for deputies with the provisions of the Constitution".

"There is no need to review the form of this text," specifies the Court document, noting that "the suspension of the legislative procedures related to the first reading of the bill on the liquidation of the pensions of the Advisors does not fall within its jurisdiction," reports Medias24.

The two bills aimed at liquidating the pension scheme for parliamentarians were adopted in December 2020 by the House of Representatives. Transmitted to the House of Councillors, which held a plenary session on Tuesday, January 5 to examine it, consensus was not found, even if the conference of the presidents of the parliamentary groups and groupings and the presidency of the second Chamber agreed on the need to liquidate a scheme doomed to bankruptcy.

The provision providing for the recovery by the advisers of the contributions made by the Chamber in addition to their own contributions would be the point of contention. Some deputies and councillors have criticized this measure described, by some, as a "public annuity".
