Morocco Considers Extending Citizenship to Descendants of Moroccan Jews

Deputies have introduced this week in the Moroccan Parliament a bill aimed at granting Moroccan nationality to all children and grandchildren of Moroccan Jews.
In this proposal, the deputies deplore "the suffering of Moroccan Jews" who have lost their nationality for reasons beyond their control. A regrettable situation that has been perpetuated from generation to generation.
The loss of Moroccan nationality by Jews is notably linked to the distance of their countries of residence from Morocco, the difficulties of travel, and the political, security or economic situations of these countries. All these reasons have prevented Moroccan Jews abroad from enjoying their civil, cultural, social and economic rights in Morocco, it is pointed out in the bill.
The initiators denounce the inaction of previous legislatures who have not taken any text to allow Moroccan Jews to fully enjoy their rights. They call for a revision of the Moroccan nationality law to take into account Moroccan Jews, as well as their children and grandchildren, while leaving them the possibility of keeping their nationalities.
The proposal also calls on the government to grant facilities to Moroccan Jews and their descendants in order to promote their integration into economic, political, cultural and social life. It also recommends the creation of central and external departments in the ministries, dedicated to Moroccan Jews.
