Morocco Considers Reimposing Lockdown as COVID-19 Cases Rise

The specter of a reconfinement hanging over the heads of Moroccans was, on Tuesday, at the heart of the Prime Minister’s intervention before the parliamentarians. Saad Eddine El Othmani declared that total reconfinement remains a possibility if the health situation becomes uncontrollable.

The monthly session of oral questions on public policies in the House of Advisors focused on the thorny issue of the reconfinement dreaded by most Moroccans. El Othmani indicated that no one really wants such a possibility, "because of its economic, social and psychological repercussions. But this remains a possible option if the situation becomes uncontrollable".

For the head of the executive, only the seriousness of each citizen in respecting preventive measures could prevent the return of confinement. For him, "the epidemiological situation is worrying, but thanks to the collective efforts and sacrifices of the national medical corps, it has not yet become uncontrollable".

Aware of the pressure on the medical sector, he invited them to make more sacrifices to defeat this disease. For him, the priority is the fight against the spread of the pandemic. Everyone must get involved to achieve this. Respect for individual and collective measures must be the order of the day. He stressed that the decisions taken by the authorities should not be seen as sanctions but a desire to put an end to a virus that has enormous consequences on all levels, in all sectors.
