Morocco Considers Reducing Regions from 12 to 9 in Administrative Overhaul

The Moroccan Ministry of the Interior is considering a new administrative division that could reduce the number of regions from 12 to 9.
This project, which should be adopted before 2027, aims to optimize the efficiency of the administration, strengthen the cohesion between the regions and reduce economic and social disparities.
One of the most striking proposals is the merger of the three regions of the Sahara: Guelmim-Oued Noun, Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab. This new region, whose capital should be Laâyoune, would be part of the Autonomy Plan for the Moroccan Sahara, according to Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
Furthermore, the Drâa-Tafilalet region could disappear, its territory being divided between the Souss-Massa and Marrakech-Safi regions. This decision aims to create more dynamic regional hubs economically and touristically.
The project also provides for the creation of new provinces, notably in Oulad Teima (province of Taroudant), in El Aroui (Nador), in Ksar El Kebir (Loukkos area), in Bouznika and in Tiflet.
