Morocco Considers 6 PM Ramadan Curfew as COVID Variant Spreads

Moroccans are starting their 2nd Ramadan since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in a few days. With the new British variant detected in seven regions of the country, the authorities are likely to tighten preventive measures to limit the spread of this variant in the other regions.

Moroccans are still waiting to know the measures that will be adopted throughout the holy month. Even if the government has not yet made a decision, they are aware that a Ramadan month like those before the health crisis will not be possible. According to the daily Al Ahdath Al Maghribia, a curfew will be imposed before the breaking of the fast, around 6 p.m., to be lifted after the Al Fajr prayer. It stresses that the authorities will be intransigent against offenders. The same daily indicates that travel after "Ftour" will be totally prohibited as part of measures to curb the risk of Covid-19 spread.

Before the detection of cases of the British variant in seven regions, the authorities, faced with the sudden increase in cases of contamination, had extended the night curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. nationwide except in exceptional cases. The restrictive measures also include the ban on parties and public or private gatherings and the closure of restaurants, cafes, shops and large stores at 8 p.m.

Faced with the dynamics of circulation of the British variant in Morocco, the Ministry of Health urges all citizens to respect the health measures to limit the spread of the virus in the community.
