Morocco Considers Mandatory Voting Ahead of 2021 Elections

The Ministry of the Interior has asked the heads of Moroccan political parties to study the possibility of making electoral voting compulsory. This measure comes ahead of the elections of professional chambers, local authorities and the two houses of Parliament, which will take place throughout 2021.
According to the Akhbarona website, the 2016 parliamentary elections had seen a low voter turnout with only 43% of the 15 million registered voters marking their presence at the polls.
The Ministry of the Interior, which hopes not to repeat the 2016 experience, has sought the opinion of political parties on the obligation to vote, without giving more details on the subject. The Socialist and Istiqlal parties had adopted agendas in this direction, before the 2016 elections.
The site recalls that the 2011 legislative elections had recorded a high voter turnout compared to those of 2016, with a rate of 56%.
