Morocco Considers Lifting Ban on Unmarried Couples Sharing Hotel Rooms

In Morocco, the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy has initiated consultations with the Ministries of the Interior and Justice, with a view to lifting the ban on unmarried couples sharing the same hotel room.
A particularly sensitive lock is about to be broken soon. Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, mentions "the need to lift certain restrictions that prevent unmarried couples from sharing the same hotel room." Stressing that "Morocco is a country of freedoms," she pointed out that these restrictions "push these people to opt for destinations like Turkey or Europe."
The minister shared this reflection with media representatives on Friday, according to the Arabic-language daily Assabah. According to her, her department has initiated consultations with the Ministries of the Interior and Justice to resolve this issue. "As soon as she gets the answer, she will move to implementation."
In another area, Fatim-Zahra Ammor reported on the number of tourists who visited Morocco in the first five months of 2023. They number 6.5 million, an increase of 20% compared to the same period in 2019. As for the receipts, they reached 41 billion dirhams, an increase of 42% compared to the same period in 2019. And her department expects the arrival of 13.5 or 14 million tourists in Morocco by the end of this year.
