Morocco Considers Life Sentences for Child Sex Offenders Amid Public Outcry

Since the rape and murder of young Adnane, voices have not stopped calling for the strengthening of the legal arsenal so that crimes against children are severely punished. The PPS proposes that sexual abuse against minors under 18 be punished with a sentence ranging from 30 years to life imprisonment.
By proposing the aggravation of the penalties provided for by law, the Party for Progress and Socialism hopes that this will deter potential aggressors. According to the daily Al Massae, the text drawn up by the PPS also takes into account the cases of pedophiles who use moral or material power to abuse minors.
In addition to the prison sentence, the political party proposes that those who are guilty of this type of crime against a minor, disabled or mentally retarded, be sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison and a fine of 50,000 to 100,000 dirhams.
In presenting this bill, the PPS members believe that, despite the progress made by Morocco in the protection of children’s rights, justice has its hands tied when it comes to imposing the heaviest sentences.
