Morocco Considers Extending COVID-19 Unemployment Benefits as Lawmakers Push for Permanent Aid

The Covid-19 allowances, proposed by the Economic Monitoring Committee (CVE), have provided three months of income to workers whose activity has stopped due to the state of health emergency. In addition to the unions, deputies have tabled a bill in the Social Sectors Committee in the House of Representatives to maintain this social mechanism.
This text, initiated by the Haraki group, proposes to create an allowance, among other things, for people who have been unemployed for at least one month, reports the daily Aujourd’hui le Maroc. It also takes into account unemployed graduates looking for a job.
To succeed in this challenge, the deputies are counting on the Unified Social Register, which should allow better targeting of public aid in favor of underprivileged families. Several criteria are taken into account, including Moroccan nationality, active job search and any evidence that they have no other source of income.
These beneficiaries must also not benefit from a social assistance program or another unemployment benefit scheme. As for unemployed graduates, they must also prove that they have been looking for a job for at least a year from the date of issuance of their diploma. As for artisans or professionals in other trades, they will also have to prove that they have been unemployed for a month and do not benefit from any social security scheme.
For now, the bill does not provide any details on the recommended scheme, but it should exist alongside the unemployment allowance scheme set up a few years ago in favor of people registered with the CNSS (National Social Security Fund).
