Morocco Considers Extended 3-Day Eid al-Fitr Holiday for Civil Servants in 2024

The Delegate Minister in charge of Public Administration Reform and Digital Transition, Ghita Mezzour, proposes to the government to declare an exceptional three-day leave instead of two on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr 2024.

"Eid al-Fitr this year is scheduled for either Wednesday, April 10 or Thursday, April 11, 2024. It is impossible to determine the exact day of Eid before the sunset of Tuesday, 29 Ramadan 1445 (April 9, 2024)," the minister explained in a letter addressed to the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, suggesting "to extend the Eid al-Fitr leave this year to three days instead of two" in order to avoid any confusion and to allow employees who wish to do so, to celebrate this holiday outside their city.

Ghita Mezzour proposed "to grant an exceptional day off either on Wednesday, April 10, if this day corresponds to the 30th day of Ramadan, or on Friday, April 12, if this day corresponds to the 3rd day of Shawwal." The minister bases her request on a decree setting the days and hours of work in public administrations and local authorities.

Article 2 of this decree offers the possibility for the Head of Government to suspend work exceptionally in case of proven necessity, indicated the government member, recalling that exceptional leaves had been granted in the past on the occasion of religious holidays. The latest one dates back to Friday, April 21, 2023, when a suspension of work was decreed in public administrations and local authorities on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr 2023.
