Morocco Considers Easing COVID-19 Restrictions by Early Summer, Expert Says

It is possible to ease the preventive measures and travel restrictions enacted to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in Morocco in the first weeks of summer. This is at least what Azzedine Ibrahimi, director of the Biotechnology Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat, member of the scientific committee, thinks.

"Yes, and boldly, I say that it would be possible to make the first months of summer a first step to mitigate all health measures," he said in a message posted on his Facebook page. To support his argument, he explained that a large part of the population has been able to develop immunity against Covid-19, either naturally or through vaccination. He specified that between 25 and 30% of Moroccans have developed natural immunity, having contracted the coronavirus, in symptomatic or asymptomatic cases. Including the elderly, considered at risk, the majority of whom have been vaccinated.

He added that Moroccans under 60 do not develop critical cases and therefore do not need hospitalization in most cases, except for a few exceptions. These data lead Azzedine Ibrahimi to affirm that it is indeed possible to ease the restrictive and health measures while controlling the epidemiological situation. Even without receiving other vaccine deliveries in the coming weeks. However, the specialist calls for maximum vigilance, as passing a summer without restrictions depends on it.

Currently, Morocco is awaiting other batches of vaccine to continue its vaccination campaign against the coronavirus normally. Faced with an imminent stock shortage, the Ministry of Health has also suspended the administration of the first dose. As of March 28, 4,302,183 people have received the first dose of the vaccine, while 3,332,292 people have received the second injection.
