Morocco Considers Cannabis Legalization for Medical Research and Therapy

The Tanger Appeal took place three years ago. It resulted from the International Colloquium on Cannabis and Drugs. Its participants had launched an appeal for the decriminalization of the consumption of this drug. Initiatives have since multiplied in the same direction. One of the latest is that of the Council of the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region, which has decided to finance a feasibility study on the exploitation of the properties of cannabis for therapeutic and pharmacological purposes.
This study will be carried out in collaboration with the Scientific Institute of Rabat, attached to the Mohammed V University. The opprobrium that touches cannabis would be gradually fading, according to L’économiste.
Various research has already demonstrated the therapeutic interest of this plant and its miracle molecule, THC, the first to have been isolated and identified. About a hundred other molecules, called "Cannabinoids", are currently attracting the attention of several researchers.
They are studying their potential, especially therapeutic, effects and their mechanisms of action in the body, reveals the newspaper.
Initiatives for the alternative exploitation of cannabis also target other areas, because, according to L’économiste, a recent study published by the Prohibition Partners institute revealed that Morocco could generate 100 billion DH in cannabis cultivation revenues, in the event of legalization and regulation of the sector.
By 2023, the potential in terms of turnover for the African continent alone is estimated at 7.1 billion dollars, a little over 70 billion DH.
This is the case of several African countries interested in the cannabis industry and its legalization, including South Africa, Lesotho, Nigeria, Malawi, Ghana and Zambia.
Although it is prohibited, 90,000 to 140,000 families live from its cultivation and marketing in northern Morocco, with nearly 800,000 people employed on a daily basis.
