Morocco Considers Acquiring Russian S-400 Air Defense System

Morocco is eyeing the Russian S-400 Triumf air defense system. This cutting-edge system, capable of intercepting long-range targets, has been of interest to the kingdom for several years.

Well-informed sources cited by the Russian agency Sputnik mention discussions between Rabat and Moscow, even though no purchase agreement has yet been concluded. This potential acquisition would be a major turning point for Moroccan defense, which aims to modernize its equipment and diversify its military alliances.

The S-400 Triumf, developed by the Russian manufacturer Almaz Antey and deployed by the Russian army since 2007, is considered one of the most powerful air defense systems in the world. Its ability to detect and neutralize enemy aircraft and missiles at a distance of 400 kilometers and up to 30 kilometers in altitude makes it a strategic asset for many countries.

Algeria has already taken the plunge in 2021, signing a multi-billion dollar contract with Russia for the acquisition of the S-400. For Morocco, this interest is part of a desire to diversify its defense partnerships.

In the past, Morocco had shown interest in this Russian S-400 air defense system, but had to ultimately opt for the American Patriot MIM-104 system. This change of course was due to threats from the United States to apply the CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) law, which imposes economic sanctions on any country concluding military agreements with Russia. Fearing retaliation, Morocco had preferred to preserve its relationship with the United States, a major arms supplier, and therefore renounced the Russian system despite its performance.
