Morocco Condemns Charlie Hebdo's Caricature of King Mohammed VI as 'Criminal Act'

The National Press Council (CNP) has strongly condemned what it describes as the "heinous criminal act" of the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo, accusing it of directly attacking King Mohammed VI.

According to the CNP, this act is part of a series of media attacks targeting the Moroccan constitutional institutions, initiated by certain French media. These actions would, according to the Council, have an impact on the willingness of Moroccan citizens to financially contribute to national causes.

In a statement, the Council deplores that some French media have abandoned their informative role to adopt political and ideological postures. Instead of providing constructive analyzes related to the tragedies affecting Morocco, these media would opt for the spread of fake news and attacks against the country’s institutions. The CNP particularly highlights the impact of Charlie Hebdo, accused of dissuading citizens from financially participating in national initiatives.

The CNP has also highlighted ethically reprehensible behaviors on the part of certain French media, including the dissemination of images of minors without consent and the biased selection of interviewees. It notes an "inexplicable hostility" towards the Moroccan people on the part of these press organs, which would violate the ethical rules of journalism.

While saluting the professional and ethical commitment of certain French media, the CNP expresses its "deep consternation" in the face of those who use the coverage of a natural disaster in Morocco to serve political objectives. It calls for vigilance from public opinion and urges the professional organizations of the French press to intervene to put an end to these attacks.
