Morocco Commits to Ceasefire in Western Sahara, Seeks Diplomatic Solution

A few weeks after securing the free movement of people and goods in Guerguerat, Morocco has committed to respecting the ceasefire in order to find a definitive solution to the Sahara issue.

In an interview with the BBC, the Moroccan ambassador to Moscow, Lotfi Bouchaâra, pointed out that this commitment is at the highest level, a bit like the interview between King Mohammed VI and the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.

During the interview, the Moroccan diplomat acknowledged that negotiation is the best option in the settlement of any dispute. "Going to war is a bad option," he wished. He also renewed Morocco’s commitment to the political process which "cannot succeed in the absence of genuine partners". For Lotfi Bouchaâra, the Kingdom is willing to dialogue "with parties and not with a ghost".

The head of the Moroccan representation in Russia did not fail to recall the key role played by Algeria in this conflict while inviting "more consistency in the Algerian conduct". As for the Polisario, Lotfi Bouchaâra criticized its incompatible choices. "Morocco, with its 12 centuries of history, is ready to defend itself and fears nothing but despite all that, continues to believe in the political process as the only solution to this dispute," assured the ambassador.
