Morocco: the collapse of a construction site in Marrakech shakes buyers of new housing

A disaster was narrowly averted in Marrakech. The collapse of a building under construction, which occurred during a period of heavy rain, has provoked the anger of local residents and reignited the eternal debate on the safety of construction sites in Morocco. While no victims are to be deplored, the incident raises serious questions about compliance with standards.

It is a true miracle that saved the lives of about ten workers. Usually present on the slab or below, they had left the site shortly before the concrete ceiling collapsed with a crash. According to an eyewitness on the scene, the structure did not withstand the weight of the accumulated rainwater. The recently poured concrete had not had time to dry sufficiently to support this overload, causing a vertical subsidence of the 20-centimeter-thick slab.

While this witness rules out the theory of fraud on the materials, assuring that the iron and cement were of good quality, the incident has caused a shock wave in the neighborhood. The residents denounce a flagrant lack of professionalism, questioning the decision to pour concrete when weather alerts were announcing torrential rains. For them, the climatic argument is not enough to excuse what they describe as "defective work", pointing to the moral responsibility of the developers.

Concern is now spreading among future buyers, these families who often invest a lifetime’s savings on plans. The sight of this devastated construction site fuels the fear of being delivered fragile housing, built hastily to maximize profits. Faced with this desolate spectacle, the residents call on the authorities to tighten technical controls so that the race for quick gains is no longer at the expense of the safety of citizens.
