Morocco Closes Over 500 Factories Amid Rising COVID-19 Concerns

The General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM) calls on companies to strictly respect the prevention measures enacted by the Moroccan authorities in order to curb the spread of coronavirus in the kingdom. This call follows the outbreaks of contamination detected in factories in Lalla Mimouna, Safi, Tangier and the closure of several factories.
"The concern is rising today with regard to this COVID-19 virus. It is becoming more and more virulent. Hence the need for companies to redouble their vigilance by strengthening the health and preventive measures put in place in the workplace and in the transport of personnel and by ensuring the rigorous application by their employees of the rules of hygiene and distancing," said Chakib El Alj, president of the CGEM.
Also, he called on companies that are members of the CGEM or not to the ongoing mass screening campaign. In total, 776,000 employees from 6,500 companies are on the list of people to be tested. Already, more than 134,000 employees have already taken the COVID-19 test.
On Tuesday, July 14, the Ministry of the Interior had taken 514 decisions to close industrial and commercial units in 34 prefectures and provinces of the country for non-compliance with the health measures in force. Among them, 98 remained closed. The others are in the process of regularizing their situation.
