Morocco Closes Over 2,200 Prayer Rooms in Mosque Modernization Plan

The government announced on Monday the closure of 2273 prayer rooms, on the grounds that they no longer meet the standards in force.
This decision is part of a plan to install new well-structured mosques, said the Minister of Habous and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Taoufiq, specifying that his services are constantly monitoring some of them, to take stock of the activities and occupants, in order to integrate them into the formal circuit.
There are between 220 and 300 mosques listed each year to be added to the list of those that must be closed for restoration. Work whose financial cost is around 400 million dirhams, he explained.
Others on the list are nevertheless exceptionally authorized to open during the month of Ramadan to reduce the overcrowding of mosques, he said.
