Morocco Climbs 9 Spots in Global Peace Index, Leads Maghreb Region

Morocco has just gained 9 places in the 2021 Peace Index ranking (GPI 2021) of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), and ranks first in the Maghreb and 79th in the world out of 163 independent states and territories.
This report, which is the fifteenth published by the IEP, is based on three indicators to measure the state of peace. These are the level of security and safety of society, the extent of ongoing national and international conflicts, and the degree of militarization.
With a score of 2.015, Morocco gains 9 places in the 2021 ranking, thus ranking 79th, although it has lost 0.038 points.
Ranking 15th in Africa, the kingdom positions itself behind Mauritius, Ghana, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Senegal, Tanzania, Malawi, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Eswatini, Madagascar, Zambia and Liberia.
Regarding the safety of society, Morocco obtains a score of 2,261, the study points out. According to the GPI 2020, the direct and indirect economic cost of violence represents 6% of Morocco’s GDP.
It should be noted that the GPI 2021 report published by the IEP covers 99.7% of the world’s population.
