Morocco’s Civil Council Warns Lockdown May Be Ineffective Without Social Support for Vulnerable Groups

The member associations of the Civil Council for the fight against all forms of discrimination have some apprehensions about the lockdown imposed by the Moroccan authorities. While welcoming the measures taken by the Moroccan state to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the Civil Council believes that this lockdown risks being "ineffective" if it is not accompanied by social measures that take into account the socioeconomic situation of the most disadvantaged groups.
The Civil Council is made up of 14 civil society organizations engaged in the fight against discrimination. According to Hespress, it indeed wants to draw attention to "people in vulnerable situations who are facing great difficulties during this period of health crisis", whether they are Moroccan or not. This is the case of the homeless, people working in the informal economy, day laborers, undeclared and seasonal domestic workers who will no longer have any income during this lockdown period.
It also defends the cause of people with non-normative sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions, who have "difficulties in accessing fundamental rights and social and health services", the same source specifies.
The Civil Council associations also insist on "guaranteeing the right of access to information on the measures taken for the implementation of the lockdown and for the aforementioned categories. They propose to the government to "set up emergency social monitoring and assistance actions" for all the aforementioned categories.
And on the financial level, the Civil Council calls to "ensure transparent and equitable management of the Fund set up to fight the coronavirus pandemic".
