Morocco City Sparks Outrage with Stray Dog Culling Campaign

The local authorities of the city of Zemamra, in the El Jadida region, have launched a controversial culling campaign aimed at eliminating the stray dogs that proliferate in the city. This operation, justified by public safety, has provoked the indignation of animal rights defenders who describe it as a "crime against these animals".
Faced with the alarming increase in the number of stray dogs in the streets and neighborhoods of Zemamra, the authorities have taken the radical decision to shoot them. This measure has been welcomed by some residents, fearful for their safety and that of their children.
However, this culling campaign has also encountered strong opposition from animal protection associations. Ahmed Tazi, president of the association "Adan", denounced this brutal method, describing it as "regrettable" and "contrary to international public health standards".
According to Tazi, interviewed by Hespress, the culling of stray dogs is not a sustainable solution and may even exacerbate the problem. He recommends rather the implementation of the protocol recommended by the Ministry of the Interior, which advocates sterilization, vaccination and the establishment of shelters for these animals.
"Sterilization stops reproduction and their aggressiveness; thus contributing to public health," he said, stressing that this more humane and responsible approach would make it possible to control the canine population in a sustainable and effective manner.
