Morocco Cherry Tomatoes Flood French Market - Producers Demand Action
Summer sales of cherry tomatoes are exploding, but French producers are seething. Faced with massive imports from Morocco at unbeatable prices, market gardeners denounce unfair competition and demand a revision of trade agreements.
The price war is playing out directly on supermarket shelves. On one side, the 250-gram tray from Morocco is displayed year-round at 99 cents. On the other, the new "sovereign" 100% French alternative, launched with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, cannot drop below 1.29 euros. This gap is explained by a massive wage gap.

Pierre-Yves Jestin, head of the Savéol cooperative and president of the association representing 500 French producers, sums up the situation: "Today, we have an hourly cost in France that must be around 15 euros. When you compare that with Morocco at 1 euro per hour, and knowing that the first production cost for a cherry tomato is labor."
This formidable competitiveness allows Moroccan farmers to flood the European market, with 275,000 tons shipped in 2025 alone. These volumes are supported by a reduction in customs duties validated by the European Union in 2012. According to information reported by Francinfo, French professionals are calling for an immediate overhaul of this treaty.

Initially designed to guarantee the supply of classic tomatoes during the winter period, the text "no longer corresponds to the criteria that existed at that time." The stakes are colossal for France, where consumption of the cherry variety has been climbing steadily since 2019, reaching 115,000 tons consumed last year.
