Morocco Celebrates Restored Jewish Cemetery with Pilgrimage to Al Jadida

To celebrate the renovation of a Jewish cemetery located in the coastal city of Al Jadida, Moroccan officials and Jewish community leaders gathered for a pilgrimage.
Nearly 200 people came at the beginning of September to pray at the fully restored Jewish cemetery. Located in the city of Al Jadida, southwest of Rabat, this cemetery houses the tomb of Rabbi Ihya Haïm Assouline, a 19th century kabbalist expert.
According to Morocco Jewish Times, the Jewish participants took advantage of the celebration of the renovation of the cemetery to complete a pilgrimage to the tomb of the late Rabbi. The site reports that the entire surface of the cemetery has been paved to prevent the growth of weeds. The walls and stones as well as the large gate have been renovated.
This renovation is part of the active phase of the restoration project launched in 2010 by King Mohammed VI. At least 167 Jewish burial sites across Morocco are concerned.
