Morocco Cautious on Border Reopening Despite Vaccination Progress

While the Coronavirus virus is somewhat under control in Morocco, the reopening of borders remains uncertain. Even for this summer, the authorities remain cautious.

To revive the tourism sector, Morocco can showcase its vaccination statistics, which currently stand at 8 million people vaccinated, including 5 million who have received both doses, or "16.6% of the target population". But with these figures, a trip to Tangier or a family return is not guaranteed, as the authorities prefer to be rather cautious, informs Le Point, specifying that the state of health emergency has been extended until June 10 next.

After the congratulations of the Minister of Health in the face of the management of the crisis, the curfew has been eased, but the airlines remain very cautious in their announcements. Although Air France has announced flights from Paris to Tangier and Agadir, they all remain suspended pending Morocco’s decision.

However, on May 26, Rabat recorded two deaths and 385 new cases for a population of 36 million. In 2020, the country recorded one death and 99 cases per day. But the resumption of tourism should wait until 2022, "2023 at full capacity", estimated a businessman. In the end, Morocco is opting for the fight against the pandemic rather than generating a new wave for a not so certain tourist season.
