Morocco’s CAN 2024 Squad: Regragui Unveils Surprise Selections for Africa Cup of Nations

The coach of the Moroccan national team, Walid Regragui, has unveiled his extended list for the next Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) to be held from January 13 to February 11, 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire. A big surprise is on the program.
Amine El Ouaad, the goalkeeper of RS de Berkane, the midfielder of RC Lens Neil El Aynaoui, son of tennis legend Younès El Aynaoui, and the left winger Nabil Alioui are the new additions to the list of 55 players unveiled by Walid Regragui for the 2024 CAN, and submitted to CAF. Adam Masina, who plays as a left-back at Udinese in Serie A, is also on this provisional list. He could replace his compatriot, Bayern Munich player Noussair Mazraoui, 26. The latter is suffering from a torn muscle fascia in his left calf, sustained last week in the Champions League against Manchester United.
Even though his name is on the extended list, his estimated downtime of at least six weeks according to the German press could prevent him from participating in the continental tournament. "We will have to wait and see if Noussair Mazraoui can participate in the Africa Cup of Nations due to his injury," his coach Thomas Tuchel said in a press conference on Tuesday before the match against Wolfsburg for the 16th league matchday. Nordine Amrabat, 36, the big brother of Sofyan, is the big surprise of this pre-list. The attacking midfielder of AEK Athens FC could make his return to the Atlas Lions’ den. His last call-up dates back to 2019.
The 24 countries qualified for the 2024 CAN final phase have all submitted their pre-list of selected players to CAF.
Here is the complete list of the 55 pre-selected players:
Goalkeepers: Yassine Bounou, Munir El Kajoui, El Mehdi Benabid, Youssef El Motie, Anas Zniti, Amine El Ouaad.
Defenders: Achraf Hakimi, Achraf Dari, Chadi Riad, Ayoub El
