Morocco Calls for African Union Reform to Boost Efficiency and Meet Population Needs

Since its establishment, Morocco has supported the institutional reform process of the AU. The kingdom has a very strong awareness of its position as a member of the Advisory Committee, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, during the 34th ordinary session of the AU Summit, which was held by videoconference on Saturday.

"Our institutional family must evolve towards greater efficiency and rationalization of the pan-African organization, in order to be in line with the expectations of African populations," said the head of Moroccan diplomacy, adding that his country is part of the process of this reform. Nasser Bourita stressed that "the interim report on the institutional reform of the AU, presented by the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, is an example of structuring determination and visionary leadership, on one of the most strategic projects for our Union".

For Morocco, 2021 is "as decisive as 2002, which saw our organization undergo its first institutional transformation. Except that we are doing it today with the hindsight of experience, with the confidence of our achievements, but also the lessons of our shortcomings," recalled Mr. Bourita. Thus, "we must take the measure of this institutional turning point," he specified, while considering that the AU is at a new era that must be anchored in authentic pan-Africanism, inspired by the vision of the founding fathers.

Morocco is pleased with the continuation of the process through an exemplary approach of dialogue, co-construction and co-ownership, thanks to the leadership of Mr. Kagame and the determination of the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.

However, Morocco notes, the reform will have an unfinished taste if one of the main bodies of the AU, especially the Peace and Security Council, is not examined clearly and deeply, as recommended by the report of President Kagame, inviting his peers to cling to it without delay.
