Morocco to Buy Consulate Buildings Abroad, Cutting Rental Costs

In order to rationalize expenses and mitigate the high costs of rentals abroad, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad has implemented a strategic plan.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, announced during a meeting with the Committee on Foreign Affairs, National Defense and Islamic Affairs of the House of Representatives, the ministry’s intention to acquire between three and four buildings each year to reduce rental expenses.
To improve the efficiency of expenditures, the ministry has also undertaken the construction of new diplomatic and consular complexes, at a rate of three to four per year, while proceeding with the sale of unused administrative buildings. This initiative aims to optimize the use of the Kingdom’s real estate assets abroad, thus contributing to better management of financial resources.
Nasser Bourita also reported on the financial challenges faced by the ministry, highlighting the negative impact of external factors such as the complex international situation, exchange rate fluctuations and the rise in energy prices. These elements have led to an unexpected increase in expenses related to rentals, energy, communication and the transportation of personnel abroad, with forecasts indicating that this trend could continue in 2024.
Similarly, the minister highlighted the ongoing efforts of his department to digitize consular services and strengthen cybersecurity. This includes investing in the modernization of the IT infrastructure and the acquisition of advanced surveillance systems to counter potential cyber attacks.
