Morocco Braces for Potential Protests as Cost of Living Soars

The Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, has sounded the general alert to deal with any possible protest movement following the rise in prices of basic necessities.
Abdelouafi Laftit has given firm instructions to avoid any outburst of anger from citizens, particularly in the provinces and remote areas such as the Oriental and the Rif where the high cost of living is seriously affecting the household budget, according to well-informed sources at Maghreb-Intelligence.

The Moroccan authorities are taking all measures to avoid reliving the wave of protests against the high cost of living recorded in 2006-2007 throughout the kingdom. They also fear a political recovery of these demonstrations due to the rise in prices, as was the case in the past with Al Adl Wal Ihssane or even Annahj Addimocrati (extreme left) and the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH).
Pending a possible descent into the streets, Moroccans are already expressing their anger on social networks. They are notably demanding the resignation of the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch.
