Morocco Braces for Intense Heat Wave as Meteorologists Predict Scorching Summer

In Morocco, the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) forecasts a particularly hot summer beyond seasonal norms, extending from May to July. The coming weeks could resemble what Moroccans experienced in 2022.
As in 2022, Morocco should suffer this year from a major heat wave in the coming weeks. According to the explanations provided by Abdelfattah Sahibi, Director General of the DGM during a press conference held on May 10 at the institution’s headquarters in Casablanca, a heat wave will affect all regions of the kingdom in May, June and July, with temperatures exceeding the usual averages. His department, he assured, will issue alert bulletins during this heat wave.
Following Sahibi, Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, stated that the impact of this expected heat wave would be considerable on water reserves, particularly due to evaporation. According to him, his department is on alert. He said that his ministry and the various stakeholders are striving to accelerate the construction of dams and the connection between water basins.
In 2022, Morocco experienced the worst heat wave episodes in more than forty years, with temperatures exceeding the record set in 2020. "The average temperatures last year exceeded the climatic normal for the period 1981-2010 by about 1.63°C," it is recalled.
