Morocco Boosts Security Measures to Combat Electricity Theft and Protect Utility Workers

To fight organized theft, and following a series of attacks, ONEE has demanded the strengthening of the surveillance and protection system for its field operators.
Surveillance cameras at various critical points and police patrols in the field. This is the new security measure put in place by the supervisory authority to track down electricity thieves.
The series of thefts and attacks that have affected several public and private organizations is gradually leading the police services to strengthen their mobilization in the field. In this regard, the Ministry of the Interior has mobilized and equipped its units to expand the coverage area. According to Al Massae, this increased police surveillance has significantly reduced cable theft. This was made possible in particular through the use of cameras.
The statistics revealed by ONEE show the extent of the damage. During the period from January to September 2018, more than 11,600 cases of electricity theft were recorded, including more than 190 in rural areas or on the outskirts of cities. These acts cost nearly 430 million dirhams for 265 GWh stolen.
