Morocco Begins Construction of $880,000 Mosque at Saharan Border Crossing

A mosque will soon be erected at the El Guerguarat border post, announced the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs. The total cost of this religious building is estimated at 8.8 million DH.

Within a year, the faithful of the Sahara will be able to have this place of worship, built on an area of 3,767 m², reports the Map. The mosque, whose construction work was launched on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Morocco’s independence, includes a prayer hall for men and another for women, ablution rooms, a minaret and a residence for the imam.

For the representative of the minister Abdelkader Alioui, the future mosque will allow the faithful to normally fulfill their religious duties. It will also be able to support the dynamic of urban development at the border post and in the commune of Bir Guendouz. It will be built according to Islamic architectural standards in accordance with the recommendations of King Mohammed VI, the official said.

This religious building is now added to the many socio-economic achievements installed at the Moroccan-Mauritanian border post as well as to the other state enterprises that offer services to the local population. A few days ago, the traffic of people and goods had been restored at this border post following a military intervention against the Polisario.
