Morocco Bans Unjustified Online Payment Fees to Boost Digital Economy

The Competition Council has issued a warning: service fees added to online payments in several economic sectors have no justification. These additional costs, according to the Council, hinder the digitalization of the economy and weigh heavily on the budget of consumers.
In response, the Council has asked companies to stop these practices, organizing meetings with the relevant authorities and operators. The goal is to ensure that everyone respects the rules and stops charging these unnecessary fees to customers.
These efforts seem to have borne fruit, it is indicated in a press release. Several major names, from telecoms to water and electricity suppliers, have put an end to these unjustified fees. Other public services have also promised to eliminate these costs starting in 2024, taking into account their current budgets.
The Competition Council expressed its satisfaction with the goodwill and rapid action of all participants, promising to continue monitoring the markets, with a view to fair competition and strong protection for Moroccan consumers.
