Morocco’s Bakers Demand Overhaul of Wheat Flour Subsidy System

Professionals in the bakery and pastry industry decry the system of subsidizing soft wheat flours in Morocco. They are calling for a complete reform of this system.
Although criticized, the regulatory regime of national soft wheat flour (FNBT) has been renewed, reports L’Économiste. By decree, the Ministry of Agriculture has set the conditions for purchasing soft wheat intended for subsidized flour. In detail, no changes have been observed in the selling prices of this flour to the general public or in the cost of bread at the bakery.
According to the same source, the government had promised the professionals the reform of this subsidy system without keeping it. This reform should also concern the activity of production and distribution of soft wheat, which remains the only one regulated to date.
For now, soft wheat remains the exception to the rule even if the legal framework governing the cereal sector enshrines market freedom. The prices practiced on the market are often higher than the fixed prices.
For now, the very existence of the subsidy, often questioned, takes precedence over the issue of price. Professionals continue to call for the reform of this subsidy system.
