Morocco Backs Venezuelan Opposition, Aligns with US on Venezuela Crisis

Nasser Bourita, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation, reiterated his support for the Venezuelan opposition led by Juan Guaido.
"The Kingdom of Morocco joins the United States and the group of [Latin American countries created in August 2017, editor’s note] to support the Venezuelan people in their efforts to claim their rights," tweeted the head of Moroccan diplomacy. His message was welcomed by the Presidential Commissioner for Foreign Relations of the government chaired by Julio Borges.
"We thank Morocco for having joined the Joint Declaration in which the world calls for free elections and a transition in Venezuela. Support for the democratic cause and the rejection of the maneuvers of the dictatorship to try to stop the change aspired to by Venezuelans are consolidated," he commented.
Since Nicolas Maduro had described the Sahara as "occupied territories", relations between Morocco and Venezuela have deteriorated. The kingdom supports Mr. Guaido, recognized as interim president of the country by about fifty countries including the United States and France. Moreover, Calos Scull, diplomatic representative of Juan Guaido, had met in Lima with Youssef Bella, Morocco’s ambassador to Peru, on the relations between the two countries in February 2019, reported Le 360.
During this meeting, the Venezuelan diplomat stated that there would be a "restoration of the traditional friendly relations with Morocco, which have been negatively affected by the interference of the Maduro regime to the detriment of the territorial integrity of Morocco".
Following a telephone conversation between Nasser Bourita and Juan Guaido, Manuel Avendano, advisor on foreign affairs to the Venezuelan National Assembly controlled by the opposition, declared to the press that Venezuela would "reconsider its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) under the government of interim president Juan Guaido".
