Morocco’s Avocado Exports Surge Amid Water Scarcity Concerns

Moroccan farmers continue to produce avocados for export, despite the water stress the kingdom is experiencing. The export volume of this product has already reached 30,000 tons.
Moroccan avocado exports are expected to reach around 45,000 tons within two months, according to the Moroccan Avocado Association, which recalls that exporters have set a target of 60,000 tons for this year.
These record avocado exports from Morocco raise questions, given the severe drought and water stress the country has experienced in recent years.
Calls have been made to ban avocado cultivation in order to rationalize water use. The competent authorities have been urged to review the kingdom’s agricultural policy by focusing more on crops that are less water-intensive.
Morocco is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of avocados, with an annual production of around 140,000 tons.
