Morocco Arrests Over 85,000 for Violating COVID-19 Emergency Measures

The police have, from March 20 to the end of April, arrested 85,778 people in flagrant violation of the emergency measures put in place to fight the pandemic of the new coronavirus.

In the last 24 hours, 4,289 people have been arrested, of whom 2,179 have been placed in custody, while the others have been subjected to investigation, check-in and identity verification procedures, according to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). These arrests took place in all the cities of the kingdom, reports la Map, which stresses that the DGSN intends to work to maintain strict respect for the state of health emergency, the purpose of which remains the protection of the population.

According to the same source, the Casablanca police prefecture has a total of 11,357 arrests, and that of Rabat 10,727; while Kénitra, Marrakech, Oujda, Agadir have respectively 10,083, 7,781, 6,898 and 5,081 arrests. As for the other police prefectures and provincial security forces, the number of arrests varies between 289 and 4,975 arrests.

With regard to violations of the state of health emergency, "the penalties can go up to three months in prison and/or fines up to 1,300 dirhams". The situation in Morocco on Thursday, April 30 at 10 a.m. shows 4,359 cases affected by the coronavirus, with 168 deaths and 969 recoveries.
