Morocco Arrests Over 65,000 for Violating COVID-19 Emergency Measures

Each day brings its share of arrests for violating the state of health emergency decreed to curb the spread of the new coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic. Over the past 24 hours, more than 4,261 people have been arrested and 2,125 have been taken into custody, while the others have been subjected to investigation, check-in and identity verification procedures, says Friday, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
According to the figures published by the DGSN in a press release, it appears that since the declaration of the state of health emergency by the public authorities, "a total of 65,390 people have been arrested throughout the cities of the kingdom". In total, 34,936 have been brought before the competent public prosecutors after the custody procedure, reports the MAP.
The police headquarters of Casablanca, Rabat, Kénitra, Marrakech, Oujda, Agadir, Salé, Meknès, Béni Mellal, Tétouan and Fès still record the largest number of arrests, while in El Jadida, Settat, Tangier, Ouarzazate, Laâyoune, Errachidia, Safi, Taza, Al Hoceima, violations of the state of emergency are not as glaring.
The DGSN assures that it will maintain the course by "intensifying control operations in all cities to enforce the state of emergency", which is one of the effective means to "guarantee the health safety of all citizens".
