Morocco's Anti-Terror Unit Credits Intelligence Agency for Thwarting Attacks

Cherkaoui Habboub, the new head of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), revealed the secret to the success of the institution he is in charge of.

"The information from the DGST is the secret of our success," he said in an interview with the Arabic-language newspaper Assabah. Mr. Habboub said that the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) permanently provides valuable information to the BCIJ service, which reacts accordingly, under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office. He added that this information has enabled his institution to dismantle terrorist cells that were about to strike during these Covid-19 times.

Continuing his remarks, the official stated that "Moroccan intelligence has allowed the kingdom and its international partners to avoid bloodbaths." He recalled that it was Morocco that had alerted the United States to the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York. This intelligence, whose strength is anticipation, has also allowed Morocco to avoid many terrorist threats that weighed on Morocco.

The new head of the BCIJ also listed the new challenges facing his institution. "The terrorist threat currently comes from the Sahel-Saharan countries," he said, deploring the lack of cooperation from Algeria in the fight against terrorism.
