Morocco’s Anti-Corruption Hotline Flooded with Calls, Low Arrest Rate Persists

Corruption is reaching alarming proportions in Morocco. The direct line made available to the population to report cases they may be aware of is overflowing.
19,168 calls received in 7 months, according to L’Économiste. Only 63 cases of flagrant offense have been recorded, even though the justice system receives an average of 2 cases of this type of offense per week. For the year 2018 alone, 9,100 prosecutions have been initiated, to the great satisfaction of the Presidency of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
According to the daily newspaper, the amount demanded by the corrupt is between 200 and 300,000 dirhams. Marrakech-Safi holds the record with an arrest rate of 22%. Agents of local authorities have been heavily involved and flagged.
According to the same source, a significant portion of the complaints and grievances target the justice system with 28% of the calls. The populations demand more speed and justice from the judicial authorities in the handling of cases.
